Some cards offer a temporary bonus rate on top of their base category rate — for example, the Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards offers an additional 3% back on the choice category during the first year, effectively making it 6%. Currently, the reward multiplier in MaxRewards applies across all categories on a card, so there's no way to apply the bonus only to the affected category without inflating the other categories as well.
