Automatic Addition of Child Categories
Cody Schmidt
I like to use the "Best Card" tab to visually wrap my head around what card would be best in a given situation. I have favorited several "Parent" categories that are self explanation like "gas" where there is no need to specify every single gas station. However, there are certain parent categories that aren't as self-explanatory like "entertainment." I have a card that gives decent rewards in this category and they do a decent job at spelling out what purchases qualify. The challenge is none of the qualifying purchases are available as "child" out "sub" categories. The only available sub categories seemed to be randomly added by the max rewards (MR) team.
This leads me to believe that there should be at least one of two mechanics available to users so that we can customize it experience and organically improve the so via our own transactions. The workflow is as follows
I have a linked card that has entertainment as a benefit. MR is tracking my transactions for this card automatically. Though MR might not know exactly how a given card qualifies any given vendor / for a benefit, it becomes apparent once the transaction is posted with reward percentages applied.
The question then becomes, can't MR just automatically add any given vendor as a parent or child category based on the result of rewards on a transaction? It seems like you would have enough data from all the users to correlate and proof vendors / transactions that receive rewards under a given category.
The screenshots I have attached show examples of my card, the bank's examples of transactions that qualify in that category, the cooks categories that are currently available in MR under that category, and an example transaction, showing the vendor and the merchant category code (MCC) that could be used as a child category in MR.
At the very least, there should be a way to add your own child categories to a parent when editing a card so that users can more easily rack best cards to use in a customized, yet meaningful way.
